Some experiences of companies
implementing ISO 9001:2000
There is no doubt that ISO 9001:200 is
much less onerous to implement than the previous 1994 version. You can
be assured that we at Lewis Conquer Consultancy Services like to take
the simplest and easiest approach.
Company 1 (transition from ISO
9001:1994)
An engineering company in Bristol had
had a consultant come in from the "Nuclear" industry to install their
system. The result was a bureaucratic nightmare with several layers of
unnecessary paperwork and we calculated four documents for each member
of staff. I was possible by more or less starting from scratch to
significantly reduce the number of documents and unnecessary work. This
allowed resources to be reallocated and helped to turn a loss making
situation into a profitable one.
Company 2 (transition from ISO
9001:1994)
A company making dies for the packaging
industry. Their system had been inherited from their parent company when
they became an independent company. Although it had been trimmed down
and modified it still contained some unnecessary elements. The situation
had not been helped by an assessor who insisted that things were done in
a certain way (the way he thought they should be). In this case it was
not only possible to trim down the quality system, but also to change
assessment company. The Commercial Director said at the end of the
assessment that he was very pleased with the new system, and was
pleasantly surprised by how it was geared to business improvement and
helping the company do business. He was also pleased with the much more
helpful and positive attitude of the new assessment company.
Both these companies were
considering giving up on being registered to ISO 9000 even though this
may create problems with major customers. Both have been successfully
registered to the ISO 9001:2000
Company 3 (implementing ISO
9001:2000 from scratch)
A new company dealing with the oil
industry, providing remote monitoring solutions, based in London. A web
based system was produced, and accreditation obtained within four
months. The total consultancy time for the project being less than eight
days. The company has expanded and has recently obtained an extension to
scope to include its production facility sited near Peterborough. The
company are currently seeking ATEX certification for some of its
products; for which the quality system is an essential component. In
this case EN 13980 contains the requirements for the application of
quality systems to potentially explosive atmospheres.
Company 4 (implementing ISO
9001:2000 from scratch)
A three man company procuring
microwave components. Had made an attempt on their own to get
certification and had a large numbers of non-conformances raised against
their quality system documentation, at document review. Lewis Conquer
Consultancy Services were engaged to assist and with only three days
consultancy were able to see them through the assessment sucessfully
